Welcome to Our Spring 2009 e-Newsletter!
Message from the Director
This is an interesting time to be a director of workforce development. You only have to read the headlines to know that more and more adults are in transition, through lay-offs, dislocation, and other circumstances. Adults are seeking advice, counseling, as well as education and training opportunities. Here in the Division of Continuing Professional Studies where the Workforce Development Center is housed, we've seen a significant increase in traffic, since it is only logical to expect that adults will become focused on their education when job security is in question.
On the organizational side, I see employers working hard to stay competitive by supporting their employees and providing professional development - even through this economic downturn - so that the collective knowledge and skill sets of their workforce are sustained and continue to grow. In order to best meet the needs of employers and employees during these quickly changing economic times, the Workforce Development Center (WDC) and the Division of Continuing Professional Studies (CPS) have experienced an exciting time of growth and new opportunities.
The Workforce Development Center recently added some new workshops and series to our list of professional and executive development programming. The Division of Continuing Professional Studies is launching several new programs this fall that will offer students training in some of today's fastest growing industries. I have highlighted a handful of these new additions for you in this issue of our e-newsletter, along with updates on some of our popular programs that we are offering again this spring due to the tremendous response they received last year.
Please be in touch. I'd love to hear your feedback. Tell me what you think, and let me know what Champlain College can do to support your business or organization, as well as your employees now and into the future.NEW WDC PROGRAMS
Human Resource Management Online Workshops Powered by HR Sentry
Today's economic times make it even more important than ever to handle HR challenges professionally and with minimal risk. By teaming up with top, nationally known human resource expert HRSentry, we are now offering a series of online workshops in human resource management.
Brenda Sabin of Key Concepts, Inc. is one of the instructors for this series. Here's what Brenda has to say about it. "This series of online workshops is the answer for hiring managers without formal HR experience, working in small and medium-size companies without HR departments. And access to the HRSentry database differentiates this training from any other in the marketplace today."
The next workshop in the series, Preventing Discrimination in Hiring and Managing Employees, begins April 13. Detailed workshop descriptions and registration information are on our website, so click here to find out more.
Leadership in a Connected Age
As the State of Vermont approaches its goal of 100% digital connectivity, business and community leaders must constantly adapt and change the way they communicate, get work done, and participate in the public life of their communities.
We are able to bring you this series in partnership with the Snelling Center for Government and with the support of our corporate sponsor, New England Federal Credit Union.

A series of half-day regional workshops (click here for dates and details) followed by a full-day conference at Champlain College in Burlington (click here for the schedule) on June 9 will explore key trends in telecommunications, IT and media industries. Participants will come away with technical skills, insights, and resources that will help them to build strategies for incorporating emerging technologies into their workplaces and communities.
Listen to our lead instructor, Steve Shepard, talk about this series by clicking here. You can also watch Steve explain why you should join us.
The first regional workshop is scheduled for April 28 at Lyndon State College. Our website has detailed information about the complete series of half-day workshops and the full-day conference on June 9. Visit us online to learn more.
Certificate in Nonprofit Management
Originally designed by Woodbury College, this intensive four-month series is a collaborative project offered by Champlain and Marlboro College.
The program offers nonprofit leaders and staff the opportunity to gain and refine the essential skills needed to strengthen their organizations and achieve their missions. The program combines the best of face-to-face learning with ongoing discussion with colleagues and faculty via an online learning portal.
The spring semester filled very quickly and space is already limited for the fall semester. For more information, including registration, click here.
REPEAT PERFORMANCES
As I mentioned in my introduction, we have also been busy scheduling several repeat performances for existing programs, thanks to the strong level of interest and positive response we have received when they were offered previously. Beginning this spring, we are pleased to bring back the following WDC programs.
Management Excellence Seminar Series
This popular series is targeted tonew and recently promoted managers. Tapping into Champlain ’s talent pool, the seminar series is delivered by highly qualified practitioner faculty from our Continuing Professional Studies and Business Divisions, including an attorney specializing in employment law.
The last time we offered this series, all seats sold weeks in advance. We are excited to offer it again this spring, beginning on April 17.
You can download the Management Excellence Seminar Series brochure here or you can click here to read about the series online. If you'd like to attend, just mention this newsletter to receive our Early Bird discount.
Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) BOOTCAMP
This perennial favorite is back and is better than ever with three ways to gain your CCE Certification! Now high tech forensics professionals have a choice of attending this preparatory program online, face-to-face or through self-guided study.
And did you know that Champlain College recently became the only College in the U.S. offering an instructor-led online delivery of CCE Boot Camp?
CCE Boot Camp teaches you how to conduct forensically sound examinations and preserve evidence for admission into - and use in - legal proceedings while helping you prepare to become an Official Certified Computer Examiner.
Our next online program begins on April 13, with the next face-to-face program starting May 11.
Take a look at our website to learn more or you can always contact us at wdc@champlain.edu if you have questions or need assistance with the registration process.THE FALL FORECAST
New Workforce Development and Academic Programs Slated for a Fall Launch.
Succession Planning Executive Development Series
Are you familiar with Succession Planning? If not, you need to be. In just over ten years, 40% of the US workforce will be poised for retirement, yet a majority of CEOs have yet to pick their successor. Creating a Succession Plan is an important step to make an eventual passing of the torch as seamless as possible.
We are pleased to offer a comprehensive executive development series on this important subject, working in partnership with Paul Cope of Cope & Associates, Inc. Ms. Cope is a nationally recognized expert on this topic who is regularly contributes to articles on the subject, like this piece from Best's Review Magazine.
This executive development series is slated to launch in the fall and we will be posting a comprehensive web site that will detail the different workshops and instructors in the near future. In the meantime, please contact us with any questions at wdc@champlain.edu.
New Academic Programs Announced
The Workforce Development Center at Champlain College is not the only part of Champlain growing and expanding its list of career-enhancing opportunities. The Division of Continuing Professional Studies continues to deliver degree and professional certificate programs online and on campus that meet the educational goals of working adults in Vermont and across the country.
Healthcare Management
This fall, Champlain will launch its new Healthcare Management Program. The program will include a full spectrum of professional certificates on the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as a Bachelor's Completer Degree (for students who have already earned a 2-year Associate Degree) and a Master's of Science degree.
This program was designed to meet the enormous job growth in the healthcare sector that is expected to outpace that of the overall economy over the next decade. Employment of medical and health services managers is expected to grow 16% from 2006 to 2016, faster than average for all occupations. Increases in medical innovations, as well as challenges in controlling costs, while maintaining high quality care, are driving the demand for managers in this industry.
Building on our strengths in management and information technology, Champlain's new comprehensive program in Healthcare Management focuses on management in the healthcare environment, performance management, and information systems as strategic tools for quality improvement and cost containment.
The program was built with the involvement of a wide range of industry representatives and is designed to meet the current and future workforce needs of this growing industry. For more information about this program or to enroll this fall, please contact Dr. Mika Nash, Associate Dean.
Two New professional Certificates Announced for Fall!
Just this last week, CPS announced the approval of two new professional certificate programs - Forensic Accounting and Internet Marketing.
Certificate in Forensic Accounting
Recent corporate scandals, growth in white-collar crime and the increased need for homeland security have greatly raised the demand for forensic accounting and fraud investigative skills. To successfully detect fraud, accounting professionals need the knowledge, skills and abilities to detect illegal activities in the digital environment.
Recent legislation and auditing standards require companies and their auditors to be more aggressive in detecting and preventing fraud. In the private sector, governmental agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service and the offices of Inspector General all need accountants with forensic investigation skills. This certificate is designed to provide accounting professionals with the skills to work effectively in both the private and the public sectors.
For more information, please contact Dr. Linda Miller, Assistant Dean for Business and Accounting.
Certificate in Internet Marketing
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (Feb. 6, 2009), a growing number of companies are looking for employees with the knowledge and skills to market products and services on the Internet. This certificate introduces and provides hands-on experience with current Internet marketing topics, including pay-per-click advertising, search engine optimization, Web analytics, RSS feeds, and social networking strategies.
CPS will offer this unique certificate 100% online. It is very applied, providing students with the opportunity to use a wide variety of marketing tools during their courses to strengthen the effectiveness of their organization's internet marketing.
