The Champlain College Division of Continuing Professional Studies is seeking to admit students who can demonstrate the appropriate academic foundation, ability and attitude needed for success. We’re also looking for students who can make a positive contribution to the College’s educational community.
All applications are reviewed by committee members who are familiar with the unique experience and challenges adult learners face every day. As such, average and above-average grades in challenging high school and/or college courses are viewed most favorably. However, we also value pertinent work and military experience, as well.
We do not require SAT or ACT test scores for applicants who have graduated from high school several years ago or who have completed college-level coursework. But we may require placement testing to determine admissibility into a specific program.
If you’re thinking of applying for admission into a degree or certificate program, you should speak with one of our academic advisors to discuss your needs, goals and situation. They can help ensure you take appropriate courses and outline a sequence of classes that will ease your transition through the program. *
NOTE: You may take courses as a part-time non-degree student without being admitted into a degree or certificate program. But if you later choose to change your status from non-degree to degree student, you must submit an application form and academic transcripts to the Division of Continuing Professional Studies.
* The Division of Continuing Professional Studies does not counsel students or review applications for the Radiology, Education or Electronic Game & Interactive Development programs. Students who plan to apply for admission to these programs should contact the College’s Admission Office at (802) 860-2727 or (800) 570-5858.
Degree and certificate applicants
All degree and certificate applicants must graduate from a recognized secondary school or earn a recognized high school equivalency certificate (GED) prior to matriculating at Champlain. Completion of a college prep curriculum is preferred, with special emphasis on writing skills. Admission approval requires the following documentation:
- Official high school transcript or GED**
- SAT or ACT scores, if applicable
- Home-schooled applicants with no college courses completed must submit GED scores or SAT II scores in two different disciplines.
- Official copies of college transcripts, if applicable
- Copy of professional resume, outlining employment history and other information relating to work, military and volunteer activities pertinent to the application process
- Additional information may be requested.
** For certificate applicants, if you have earned an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, you are not required to submit an official copy of your high school transcripts; but official college transcripts are required.
Transfer students
Review Champlain College’s transfer credit policy.
International students
Additional information and documentation is required for students who have been educated outside of the United States. International students applying to a degree program must submit official copies of their high school academic records. These records must contain a list of courses completed and grades received. Additionally, the high school records must indicate that the student has successfully “graduated” from secondary school. Additional documentation may be required.
If you cannot provide the necessary documents, Champlain College requires applicants to complete the General Educational Development (GED) exam to satisfy proof of a high school education. GED exams are then evaluated to determine the applicant’s level of success. An international applicant does not have to submit SAT or ACT scores unless he or she has graduated from a U.S. high school.
Other documentation required includes:
- Results of a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or equivalent proficiency test, such as the English Language Proficient Test (ELPT) for students for whom English is not the first language. For the TOEFL, a minimum score of 500 or 172, with a minimum essay score of 4 is required. For the ELPT, a minimum score of 950 is required.
- If a student requires an I-20 form to secure a visa for student in the U.S., he or she must provide bank statements or sponsor financial statements, certifying an ability to meet the expenses of attending Champlain College for one full academic year. Sponsors will also need to submit a letter of support.
NOTE: Online students do not need to obtain a visa to study at Champlain College.
The application review process
Champlain’s Division of Continuing Professional Studies reviews applications for admission to the fall, spring and summer semesters. Accelerated courses are also offered during those semesters. The application deadline is three weeks prior to the start of a given semester. The Admission Committee typically reviews completed applications and renders a decision on a rolling basis.
Your application is considered complete when we have received:
- A signed application form
- The full application fee
- A copy of your professional resume
- An official copy of required high school or college transcripts
- English proficiency scores for students who do not speak English as their first language
- Additional information as requested
Readmission to Champlain College
Student who previously attended Champlain College as matriculating students and who missed two or more consecutive semesters must formally apply for readmission. Students can begin the readmission process by contacting the Division of Continuing Professional Studies and speaking with an enrollment counselor.
